The Union of Chambers of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Comoros is actively involved in land restoration and sustainable land management initiatives acros the three islands of the Union of the Comoros: Grande Comore (Ngazidja), Anjouan, and Mohli. The organization currently manage a total of 10 hectares of land spread acros the three islands, which are dedicated to agricultural experimentation, incubation, and land rehabilitation. These sites serve as practical demonstration and training grounds for farmers, cooperatives, womens associations, and young rural entrepreneurs. Their activities focus on restoring soil fertility through sustainable practices such as composting, agroforestry, erosion control, cover cropping, and the promotion of climate-resilient, traditional crop varieties. In degraded areas, the organization implement reforestation initiatives and land rehabilitation techniques aimed at reducing soil erosion and improving the productive capacity of farmlands. These actions are conducted in close collaboration with local rural communities, promoting inclusive participation and integrating ancestral knowledge with modern agroecological practices. The initiative places a strong emphasis on soil preservation, biodiversity conservation, and climate change adaptation, while also contributing to food security and sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable populations. In addition to current projects, UCAEP-Comoros is designing new land restoration pilot programs targeting abandoned or degraded agricultural lands on the three islands, with a focus on ecological restoration and the long-term preservation of productive ecosystems. Additionally, the effects of climate change, such as erratic rainfall and prolonged droughts, complicate the restoration of degraded lands. Land tenure insecurity also limits long-term investments in land restoration.
